About The Area

Grondola - the Village

The houses and campsite are situated in the small tranquil medieval mountain village of Grondola, in the northern tip of Tuscany. A car is necessary to reach the village up the maintained mountain road from the nearest city of Pontremoli.

The area is known as Lunigiana, which gets its name from the ancient town of Luni, a colony founded by the Romans. Grondola is a charming cobble-stoned village inhabited by a people deeply attached to their roots and traditions.

Walking through the village you can still see some important features of medieval architecture, admiring traditional stone work and many finely carved stones dating back centuries. Grondola has a local parish Church and there are also ruins of a 12th century hill top fort, or 'Castello'.

Another feature is the many 'maesta' - small wayside shrines in honour of Our Lady, which were originally built to guide and protect pilgrims.

Grondola has a small bar and shop selling basic essentials for a self-catering holiday. There is also a playground area for children and a football pitch maintained by the local villagers.
