Pontremoli - the City

The historic city of Pontremoli, 8km from Grondola, is one of the most important cities of the area. It is situated on a medieval Pilgrim Trail, the 'Via Francigena'. Its medieval Castle houses an important museum of 'stelae', or statues - a primitive art form of menhirs dating back to prehistoric times.

Pontremoli also has supermarkets, delicatessens, boutique shops, and many fine restaurants where you can sample delicious local cuisine, unavailable anywhere else in Italy. Pontremoli has a thriving café society and there are often public concerts in the main square or 'Piazza' that are extremely popular with the locals. Markets are held here and in most other local towns.

A motorway intersection gives you immediate access to the historic towns of Parma, Lucca, Pisa, Luni and Volterra. The marble mountains in Carrara are definitely worth a visit, these form the backdrop to many beautiful coastal towns and beach resorts. Boat trips to the famous Cinque Terre can be taken from the seaside resorts of La Spezia and Porto Venere. The nearest Airports are Pisa, Parma, Genova or Bologna, all about an hour's drive away.
